The Gator Guard Drill Team has a long and outstanding history of excellence. This fact is apparent by even a quick glance at the number of trophies in "Guard Supply." It is virtually impossible in the time allotted here to give either a complete or detailed account of the Guard's achievements in its 53 years of existence, so a brief outline of the Guard's history over the past years follows.
The Gator Guard was formed in December of 1953 after the Pershing Rifles unit disbanded. It had an original membership of 16 officers and men, and rose to an all time high of 72 in 1957. At the present, it consists of approximately 20 active men and women members.
Each year the Guard takes part in the University of Florida homecoming celebrations by marching in the annual homecoming parade, a Super Squad performance at Gator Expo, and a drill competition at Gator Growl. Other accomplishments include, from 1963-1972, the Guard traveled to Sarasota, Florida to take part in the King Neptune Frolics which included the All-Florida Invitational Drill Meet and parade.
For all nine years of the Guard's participation, they were voted the best drill unit in the competition. The Guard also won the Colonel's Trophy as the best marching unit in the Orlando and Ocala Christmas Parades. In 1970, the Guard had the honor of marching in the Governor's Inaugural Parade.
